So, after last week’s blog, I’ve left a lot of you wondering: what is kombucha?
Those of you who listened to our most recent podcast already know. G.T. Dave of Synergy Drinks (one of the largest manufacturers of kombucha in the United States) joined Manish and Tere on the show to talk about the miracle drink and disclose its history. For those of you who didn’t listen, tsk tsk. Nonetheless, here is a quick recap:
Kombucha is a drinkable liquid, usually a tea, which has been cultured. By cultured, I don’t mean that it is well-read and hip on things like music and art. I mean that it has living cultures in it. Kombucha is alive. IT’S ALIVE! It is much like yogurt—full of beneficial probiotics that help to keep the body balanced and healthy.
It also tastes great.
Here is where Tere would butt in—she and Manish each tried kombucha for the first time, just before producing the show. Tere wasn’t a big fan. “It’s a fermented product, and I just don’t like fermented things. Like beer. I’m trying to develop an appreciation for wine, and I’m kind-of starting to do that… but to me, [kombucha] just tasted fermented.”
Manish, on the other hand, loved it. “I had the totally opposite reaction. I like beer. I like wine. I did like the flavor of the kombucha—I liked his original brand. I thought it had a nice bubbliness to it. I thought it had a great flavor.”
This is not the only thing that Tere and Manish butt heads about. At the beginning of the show, they reminisced about their recent Halloween activities. Tere loves Halloween, and was thrilled to put a costume together and host a party. Manish, on the other hand, considers the holiday a bit of a nuisance.
Well, we can’t all agree. When it comes to Halloween and costumes, I’m with Tere all the way. But as far as beverages go, I’ve got Manish’s back. I love beer. I love wine. I love kombucha—in fact, I make my own home-brew kombucha with the hibiscus tea that we carry here at Maya Tea. It is bright magenta, tart, and delicious.
Of course, that is just my opinion. What is yours?
This week, on Facebook, I will be posting a survey question: Dou YOU like kombucha? We’d love to hear from you. A simple “yes” or “no” will do, but if you have a story about kombucha or a defense for your answer, we’d love to hear it! Post it on Facebook—you never know, maybe you’ll hear your response on the air.
That is, of course, if you’re listening. 😉
Stay tuned for more about kombucha in the coming weeks!
